Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.
Isaiah 46:9
During these cold, dull winter days it’s so nice to pour a cup of hot coffee or tea and sit still for a few minutes. God’s Word tells us in Psalm 46:10 to “Be still and know that I am God.”
Waking up to a snow covered lawn is always awe inspiring to me. First because I grew up in Florida and never woke up to a blanket of snow. Secondly, snow comes so quietly. It’s not like a heavy rainstorm where you hear the raindrops pounding on your roof followed by the clash of thunder. Snow softly drifts to the ground without ever making a sound. Snow days are God’s creative way to surprise us and remind us to be still and know He is God.
Another thing God tells us in His Word is to remember.
Remember who He is: He is Almighty God. He is the creator of this world and all the wonderful seasons. He is our Savior. He is Emmanuel, God with us. He is our Provider. He is our healer, our deliverer, our Abba Father. He is the Prince of Peace.
Remember what He has done: He loved us before the foundation of the world. He sent His only son to die on the cross to pay for our sins. He has forgiven all of our sins. He has given us abundant, new life. He conquered death and the grave! He has gone to prepare a place for us!
Remember who we are in Him: By faith in Jesus, we have become children of God. We are the daughters of the King of Kings. We are completely forever forgiven. We are loved with an everlasting, unconditional love. We are clothed in His righteousness. We have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit.
If you are like me, sometimes your memory fails you. I can’t remember where I put my keys. I can’t remember who has basketball practice today. I can’t remember what was on my grocery list because I didn’t remember to bring my list to the store! The little details in life can easily crowd out the important things. My pastor once said that humans have chronic amnesia especially when it comes to God; who He is, what He has done and who we are in Him. Just like the Israelites forgot how God had brought them out of slavery in Egypt and began to doubt His goodness only three days after He miraculously and mightily parted the Red Sea for them, we too forget that He saved us, heals us, helps us, loves us…
God knew we would forget. That’s why He gave us His Word. He has written it all down to jog our memory and remind us of His everlasting, unconditional, unfailing, eternal love.
The next time you wake up to snow, I hope it reminds you to be still and know that He is God and that it also encourages you to open up His Word and be reminded still of His unending love for you.
To the One who remembers His covenant of love forever.
