“Praise be to you, O LORD, God of our father Israel from everlasting to everlasting. Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours…In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.”
1 Chronicles 29:10-12
As I was working on my computer recently, trying to finish up my days’ worth of communications, a message popped up on the screen. This is how it read, You have only 1% power left. If you do not connect to a power source your computer will shut down. Of course, I immediately plugged it in and continued to complete my task.
How many times do you and I get to the end of our day and realize we are totally depleted of energy and strength to do even one more thing? Sometimes, our lack of energy requires us to simply lie down and rest. Our physical bodies need sleep and food to keep working efficiently. We receive signals such as hunger and fatigue that remind us it’s time to give attention to our physical needs. But, what about the spiritual part of our being? What are the signals to alert us on our need for spiritual rejuvenation? Just like physical hunger makes us long for food, our spirits hunger for God!
We clearly understand meeting the physical hunger part of our being. Statistically, as of spring 2014, in the US alone there were 635,494 restaurants available. An increase of .7% over the previous year. The demand for more food sources is on the rise. When we were created, God instilled within each one of us a hunger only He is able to satisfy.
Jesus said,
“I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” [John 6:35]
So why then, are the statistics on churches in the US so grim? As of October 2013, the Protestant churches, alone, numbered 250,000 with 200,000 being either stagnant or declining. 4000 churches reporting to have closed their doors every year! Are we losing our hunger for God?
Let me ask this: How many charges for your various technical devices do you have in your house, car, purse, briefcase and at the office? Now, how convenient is your Bible? Friend, you and I must be “plugged” into the Power Source of God’s Word every day! Just like our computers and cell phones were designed with a certain energy capacity before needing to be recharged, you and I were designed by God with the need to be reconnected to Him. So, find your Bible, and “plug into His Power Source!”
Oh God, it is so hard, in this fast paced world, to muffle the noise of “the tyranny of the urgent” that constantly harkens for our attention. Remind me to spend time with You…today. AMEN
To The One Who is ALWAYS available! “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” [Jeremiah 33:3]
