Jesus answered, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.”
John 14: 6
“Daddy, how do you know where we are going,” said the child.
The father comforted his child, “Because I’ve been there before.”
It was a foggy, wet, dreadful and dreary drive to Atlanta a few weeks ago. I didn’t know exactly where I was going, but I had looked at a map before I left home and had a pretty good idea of my destination and the best route to get there.
At one point, due to the rain and fog, I couldn’t see anything but the lines in the road and a few taillights ahead of me. Those white lines kept me on the road and as long as I stayed between them, I knew I should eventually get to where I was going.
I didn’t venture off the path but stayed the course. It was especially encouraging that I was travelling with friends. Although I couldn’t see them, I knew that one was ahead and one behind me.
Life is a journey, much like my trip to Atlanta and I am like the child wondering just how I’m going to get to my final destination, but the Bible says that Jesus has been there before. In fact, He is there now waiting for me and that gives me great comfort. He tells me in His Word,
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:1-6
We have also been given God’s Word, the Bible as our roadmap to lead us along the way. We can’t see our final destination, but we know from the map that it exists. We can take courage as we journey along this road of life. His Word will guide us like the lines on the road keep us heading in the right direction.
Just as my friends were ahead and behind me, God tells us over and over not to be afraid that He is with us here on our life’s journey; in front of us, behind us, above us, beneath us, with us.
You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Psalm 139:5
The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Deuteronomy 31:8
Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:20
But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me [the Way!]. John 14:26
We need not fear when we can’t see the road ahead of us for the fog and rain. When our future is uncertain, our health is failing, our family is dysfunctional or our financial situation is floundering, I’m here to tell you, we can know and trust that Jesus is the way to our final destination in heaven. When our eyes are on Him and our faith is in Him, we can trust that we are being guided and protected by our loving Heavenly Father no matter what circumstances we face in our lives. When you are discouraged, get out your Bible, God’s roadmap and read His promises to you and be encouraged as you prepare for your final destination by getting to know Him, Jesus Christ, better.
