Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
Psalm 139:7
Have you ever wondered why God doesn’t just call us on our cell phones? Earth has seen the Ice Age, the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the dark ages, etc. I think about all the great advances mankind has made in this world. So many we have seen in our lifetime. Some people might say we live in the communication age. Never before has it been so easy to communicate with other human beings anywhere on the planet or even in space. Every now and again the thought crosses my mind; what if God just called us on our cell phones?
In the stillness of the morning as I watched the sun rise over the lake I was trying to look something up on my phone and it was glitching – not wanting to turn on. It was then that I had an “A-ha!” moment, an epiphany so to speak when I realized that God doesn’t need a cell phone to speak to me. He can speak anytime, anywhere. And in that quiet moment I perceived, “Can you hear me now?”
Cell phone batteries die and signals get weak. But God’s coverage is always 100%. His Holy Spirit speaks loud and clear. As the Psalmist wrote, there is nowhere we can go that He is not there.
The question is can we hear him now? Are we listening or covering our ears? Is the music of life so loud that it drowns out His still small voice saying “This is the way, walk in it”?
In this golden age of communication the challenge is positioning ourselves to hear His voice. God has always spoken to His people. It’s our reception that needs adjusting. We live in the Age of Immanuel, God with us! He has given us His Word and His Holy Spirit to comfort and guide us on this journey through this world into the Age of Everlasting Life.
Until then, let’s step away from the clatter and rattle of our own busy-ness and do what we need to do to tune in to His Word, the Bible. It’s timeless technology that never needs an upgrade!
